We Work Together

We work together with an aim to make education happen in an interactive and practical way rather than the traditional way of learning.

Our Vision & Mission

Our mission is to educate deaf children in a holistic, bilingual, and truly inclusive way.

Our vision is to be a school where

  • we provide an environment with full access to learning, language and the curriculum for deaf children.
  • Indian Sign Language has equal importance along with written languages.
  • everyone in the school community feels that they belong and are accepted, giving meaning to inclusion in a real sense.
  • we educate children for the 21st-century, so that they develop into creative, resourceful and resilient members of society.
  • we fully integrate eco-education into learning.

Our vision is to be a learning community where

    • deaf children’s education is the collective responsibility of teachers, students, families and the society at large.
    • we support networking for bilingual deaf education in India and share our experiences and best practice with others in our sector.
    • we prioritise continuous professional development of those who teach deaf children, whether our own staff or others who come to learn from our expertise.

Message from the Director

Dear Friends,

My name is Sibaji, and I have the privilege of serving as the Director of Happy Hands School for the Deaf. Our school is a fully bilingual learning space where sign language is at the heart of communication, growing hand in hand with reading and writing.

As a deaf professional in education and sign language, it was always my dream to create a school where deaf children could learn in their natural language and thrive as confident individuals. In 2016, this dream took shape when I established Happy Hands School in my rural home village in Odisha, India.

At our school, we welcome deaf children below the age of six and provide them free education and boarding. Our approach focuses on developing sign language and cognitive abilities, instead of relying mainly on speech and hearing development. Over the years, it has been deeply inspiring to witness our children flourish in their language growth, creativity, and confidence.

In recognition of these efforts, Happy Hands School has received several prestigious honors: we were named the “Best School for the Deaf in India” at the India Deaf Expo 2023 in Chennai, received the NAD Best Achievement Award, and earned the Sambhavi Puraskar Jury Certification. These awards belong to our hardworking team and, most importantly, to our bright and resilient children who inspire us every day.

Looking ahead, we are committed to deepening our bilingual program through research and by addressing barriers faced by deaf learners. We want Happy Hands School to become a model for deaf education in India, showing that when deaf people lead and build their own initiatives, real and lasting change happens.

None of this would have been possible without the constant support of our promoters, donors, advisors, contributors, and well‑wishers. We are grateful for the journey so far, and we warmly invite you to continue standing with us as we expand this movement and bring the joy of bilingual education to more deaf children across the country.

With gratitude and hope,
Sibaji
Director, Happy Hands School for the Deaf
